We are pleased to announce that after taking a short break from the music
business we have returned to start a new company called Strathan Music
Limited which will follow on in the footsteps of Strathan Media Productions
Limited (the original home of the Strathan Music record label).
ABOUT US
In 1991 we started a mail order company called Northern Light situated
in Lochinver which is a small village on the north west coast of the Scottish
Highlands. The company sold a wide variety of Celtic music albums and
scenic videos. In 1992 we opened a shop in the village in which we sold
the same type of products. The shop operated until 1998 when the landlords
decided to sell the premises which effectively meant the end of the line
for the shop.
In 1996 we heard an imported copy of "Sons of Somerled" a Celtic music
album by Steve McDonald. We saw a lot of potential in this album and decided
to start a record company called Strathan Media Productions Ltd with the
aim of licensing the album for the UK market and releasing other Celtic
music albums. "Sons of Somerled" went on to be one of our all
time best sellers.
We sold Northern Light to Strathan Media Productions in 1997 and it continued
to operate as a mail order arm of the Company until 1998 when we closed
it down to concentrate fully on developing the record label side of the
business.
Between 1997 and 2009 we released 17 albums in the Celtic and crossover
genres and together they sold many tens of thousands of copies. All of
these albums were released on the Strathan Music record label which was
the trading name of Strathan Media Productions Ltd.
In August 2009 we decided that we wanted to take a break from the music
business and we closed Strathan Media Productions at the end of that year.
From August 2009 to January 2010 we looked at alternatives to the music
business but eventually came to the realisation that music is what we
know best and we decided to start another record company called Strathan
Music Limited.
The new company will continue the search for outstanding music mainly,
but not exclusively, in the Celtic and crossover genres, by the acquisition
or licensing in of existing music and also, where appropriate, by producing
new music. Our main focus will be finding usages for the compositions
and sound recordings which we represent.
