Strathan Music - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

If you have any questions that are not answered below or elsewhere on this website please contact us.

  • How do I license/get permission to use a Composition or Master Recording?

Information can be found on our License music page. Once you have selected the song(s) you want to license please Contact Us.

  • We would like to release an Album you represent. Is this possible?

We are happy to consider licensing any sound recordings we represent for inclusion on compilation or individual artist albums. Our main considerations are:

Your company should be well established in your territory or if new then it must be financially stable.

You should be confident in selling a reasonable number of copies of the album or compilation.

We represent high quality repertoire therefore we will not consider licensing individual artist albums aimed at budget or super-budget markets.

We will usually retain all digital download rights on individual artist albums.

Please feel free to contact us to discuss your requirements.

  • What do I do if I’m experiencing technical problems with this website?

To listen to music on this website you will need Adobe Flash Player 8 or higher installed on your computer. Here is a link http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ for the latest version.

Incompatibilities can often be due to your internet settings which can usually be accessed via your browser. We are not qualified to give detailed advice on such settings - there are many articles available to download on the internet.

Occasionally settings on your anti-virus software may cause problems when using the internet. We are not qualified to offer any advice regarding this type of issue. Please consult the relevant documentation for your software or search for a solution online.

If you find the text size too small/big you can usually alter this from within your web-browser. For example in Internet Explorer, click on View and then Text Size and select a larger or smaller size as required.

If all else fails please Contact Us and we will do our best to help you resolve the problem but please be aware that we are not technical experts and we cannot guarantee a solution.

  • What is a Master Use License?

A master use license is required if you want to use a particular master recording (also known as a sound recording) for your project. This license is usually issued by the owner/controller of that particular master recording. The owner/controller will discuss and hopefully agree with you what fee is to be charged for the master use license together with any other requirements. Without such agreement you will not be able to use that particular master recording. If you want to use one of the master recordings we control please visit the License Music page or Contact Us.

  • What is a Mechanical License?

A mechanical license is needed if you want to include a composition on any product that is manufactured or made available (usually for sale). For example CDs, DVDs, computer games etc. In many countries the national mechanical rights society will issue mechanical licenses on behalf of the owner/controller. In the UK the Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) issue mechanical licenses on our behalf. MCPS are now part of PRS for Music. Please visit prsformusic.com for further information. If you have any questions regarding mechanicals or are located outside of the UK please Contact Us for assistance.

In all instances if you want to change the melody, lyrics or arrangement of the composition you will need to Contact Us directly to request permission.

  • What is a Synchronisation License?

A synchronisation license gives the user the right to combine the composition with visual images, for example on a film, television programme, computer game or advert. A synchronisation license can also refer to the synchronising of a master recording with visual images in the same way as a composition, however, this can also be referred to as a “master use license”.

Be sure you know what clearances you are asking for. Is it the composition you need to clear, the master recording or both?

MCPS, which is a part of PRS for Music, can issue some composition synchronisation licenses on our behalf and for some types of use they are the only ones who can issue such licenses. However in the first instance we recommend you Contact Us to discuss your requirements. Please note that all master use requests must be cleared by Contacting Us.

  • What is the difference between a Composition and a Master Recording?

A composition (song) is a piece of music written by a composer (songwriter) which is often combined with lyrics written by a lyricist (author). There are actually two copyrights in any composition that includes lyrics: the composition copyright (music only) and the literary copyright (lyrics only).

A master recording (sound recording) is a performance of a composition that is recorded in some way such as onto a hard drive or CDR. Sometimes a composition and the master recording are created by the same person/people but frequently they are not. This explains why there are two main copyrights to be cleared when licensing music - the composition copyright and the master recording copyright.

  • What is your policy for taking on artists/composers who are looking for representation?

We are very interested in adding beautiful, powerful and inspiring music to our catalogue. Any music we take on must be of the very highest artistic and technical standard as in today's highly competitive market only the very best music will have the chance of generating significant income.

Please visit this page if you wish to submit music to us for consideration.

  • What types of licenses do you issue?

We license songs for inclusion in all types of projects and products ranging from adverts and films to albums and online uses. We can also consider requests to use music samples from the master recordings we represent or to make new arrangements of compositions we represent.

  • Where can I buy CD copies of the albums?

None of the albums we represent are currently available on CD. If and when they become available we will put details on this website. You can purchase digital downloads of the albums - please go to the Buy Music page.

  • Where can I get copies of lyrics or sheet music?

The lyrics can be accessed by going to the relevant artist or composer's 'Lyrics' page (accessed via the top menu).

Currently we only have sheet music for 'De Passati' by Frédéric Momont for which we have a piano/voice/guitar transcription. This is available upon request, in digital format, to established artists who are interested in recording a cover version of this song. If sufficient demand is shown for other compositions we may decide to have a transcription made for those titles.
